Given the size and more nacreous looking area on one side perhaps it originated from an Atrina vexillum or at least Atrina species rather than Pinna? Would be interesting to see the shell that produced it. Doubt that is possible though.

Not sure if that info fits that thread, but while you are at Pinna pearls ! I have just read in the march 2015 issue of our Revue Fran?aise de Gemmologie that the first cultured pearl of Atrina Vexillum has just been identified and studied.
The pearl is 10.6 x 9.6 mm (slightly button shaped), weight is 6.92 carats. The pearl has undergone in our national french lab X rays and tomography, revealing a bead inside.
I don't quite see the interest of such a culture in Atrina, but !...

Look at that picture! Poor Pinnas. There are less and less of them in the Med. Do you know where this was shot?

If in Baja California Mexico and the fishermen extract the product legally with permits of fishing (SEMARNAT)

Thanks or the info. Are those shells in the picture collected for pearls solely?

These pearls were also found in this type of Shell
