Japan Pearl Tour and the 7th Japan Pearl Fair hosted by the Japan Pearl Exporters Association

I’m so glad you posted those pics, Newberry. They are two of my favorite pieces in your collection!:giggle:

What an amazing adventure @jeg!!!! Thank you for taking us along! So much passion and dedication is behind the beautiful pearls we have the pleasure to see and wear. It must have been a dream to see it all and meet the wonderful pearl people, oh and let’s not forget all the incredible beauties you saw during the fair as well!!! And if I put all the fantastic food into the mix as well your trip is as good as it gets on so many levels;-)

Here are my answers to your questions:

1. I own a classic 7-7,5mm pinked akoya strand ( Hanadama quality from Takahashi) and a couple of baroque necklaces white and silver blue in different sizes. And special colored akoyas and keshis as well;-) I do LOVE the akoyas.

2. What attracts me to akoyas is the luster and orient, I just cant get over how luminous the akoyas are and I am especially mesmerized by the “aurora” effect on baroque silvers. The only thing that would discourage me from buying akoyas is the price of hight grade pearls.

3. I would love to own a Madama strand sometime in the future…and some more larger baroque silver blue strands…and multi keshi strands as well…yes akoyas definitely feature on my wish list;-)

Thanks for all your answers, everyone! I like hearing about your wish lists:giggle:

I’m attaching a little map that was handed out at the Japan Pearl Fair. It’s a map of pearl shops in Kobe, if anyone might be heading to Kobe…

This trip had me thinking about my own experiences with Akoya pearls. My opinion is that white pearls tend to be the gateway into the pearl world. Usually in the form of a strand or a pair of studs or maybe a pendant. What would bring them back for more pearls? At this point, I’ve amassed a sizable collection, and I’ve been hooked. I don’t have a ‘wish list” and I already have a lot of strands, so I’m always looking for something different or new or fun.

I have some questions for the Pearl Guide Community if you have been following along and wouldn’t mind participating no matter what stage of pearl appreciation you are at. Thank you for playing along!

1. Do you own any Akoya pearls?
2. What attracts you to Akoya pearls and why would you buy Akoya pearls? Is there a reason you wouldn’t purchase Akoya pearls?
3. What Akoya product would you consider purchasing in the future or do you have a wish list?
Been enjoying your posts!
Sorry I have been "away" for a while...my mother became sick, I had to take care of her...and she just passed away on the 13th (my birthday)...now taking care of her house, belongings...oh well! But seeing the photos, reading your text...made my day so much easier, so THANK YOU @jeg

Anyway, the very first pearl I owned was a pearl my Oma gave me when I was 4 years old and that she got at the San Diego Sea World: first time I ever laid eyes on a pearl! It was during the "Ama pearl diver" show they had there back in the 1970's.
The in 1990 I purchased a pair of Akoya pearl studs for my girlfriend...and from there on I just fell in love with pearls.
Last year I got a beautiful golden Akoya pearl pendant for my wife from one of the Pearl-Paradise livestreams: she loves it! And I also have Tahitians, South Sea and Freshwater pearl items for her...I need to set a Kasumi pearl I have too.
But Akoya pearls are just classy!

Please accept my condolences. Losing your mom is one of the most heartbreaking things in life. I'm so very sorry.

Thank you, Douglas. It’s so good to see you. I am so sorry to hear about your mom. I had been doing a lot of reflecting this holiday season because the holidays have changed so much for me without my parents and all my aunts and uncles. That whole generation is gone, and now we are the oldest and our traditions are evolving. I hope you have many happy and lasting memories. Take good care of yourself!
