The following article is typical of many I have seen recently regarding the trend of mixing beads and pearls.
From the Cincinnati Enquirer, April 3
"We're all dripping in beads this year
Dress them up with colored pearls

Take a walk through the mall this spring and you will see sandals, bags, the hems of skirts, even pillows and drapery dripping with beads, crystals and pearls. But beads are making the biggest impact at the jewelry counter in necklaces featuring a dazzling mix of colors and sizes.
Extravagant opera-length necklaces of pearls and crystals normally reserved for evening wear have evolved into everyday accessories. Shorter multi-strand pieces showcase a confetti-like mix of color including lime green, coral, crystal pastels, or pearls in lavender, champagne and pink.
Pearls have undergone a transformation. Now you can combine heirloom, South Sea pearl necklaces with their baroque freshwater cousins for a fun blend of color and texture. Or, you can pair Grandma's pearls with mixed strands of crystal, colored pearls, and semi-precious stones. Slip an outgrown ring, a monogrammed silver slide or a glittery pin onto your single strand favorites for a witty update."
