Hi there,
I've loved reading through the many threads on here, truly fascinating. I'm looking for some advice on purchasing bulk akoya pearl oysters from a farm. We have seen the various reviews of the shopfronts on Ali and want to avoid this kind of business. I've been reading about the many countries that cultivate these pearl oysters and wonder if there would be any recommendations on who to speak to? We would be looking for several thousand at a time so fairly decent size operation. Happy to consider other types of oyster if more realistic. Any help much appreciated.

LucyM,

We have had many threads recently about the pearl-in-oyster sales on Facebook and elsewhere. There have been many requests for information on where to buy oysters. It seems to be quite a big fad at present. Undoubtedly many would-be sellers think this is a good way to make a bit of extra money. We disagree!

The pearls in these immature akoya (saltwater) oysters are freshwater pearls. The were not cultured in the shells in which they are sold. The dead oyster is preserved in a chemical solution of dubious safety. The pearls are grossly overvalued and buyers are deceived about what they are getting.

On Pearl-Guide we actively discourage these sales, which we consider fraudulent.
We also do not provide any information about where to buy oysters. I am closing this thread.
