"Quality

This is determined by observing the special features of the pearl's surface and luster. But nacre thickness, color, shape and size also judge quality."

http://cpaa.org/valuation.asp

"Pearls are classified by Origin, then graded by size, shape, nacre thickness, color, luster, surface clarity and matching. These qualities are not considered equal. Some factors will be weighted to give them more influence in arriving at a final grade. A very thin nacre thickness, for example, could never yield a fine quality pearl."

This is a perfect quote and why I said I could understand the reason Josh wrote it. Quailty is judged by the surface and the luster. But those are not the only attributes that judge the overall quality of a pearl.

Interesting discussion. As I understand it pearl quality is a value judgement that is multi-dimensional (multiple characteristics that determine value). The most interesting question (to me) then becomes whether or not one or more of these dimensions are correlated or whether ( or which) dimensions are independent.

Yes I did get an answer. It depends...............on the shape. Shape can be a factor in determining the quality and not just the value of a pearl. To be of an equal quality and value a non round pearl needs to have a symmetrical shape. I suppose an exceptional baroque shape may also be of the same "quality" as a round or drop?

I understand Caitlin that round pearls are and have been in the past the most valuable of all pearls.

Round are more valued and more valuable because of their rarity. Even with a bead inside mollusks manage to make most pearls lumpy and bumpy.
The bigger the pearl or the thicker the nacre layer the more chance of an off round or flaw happening.
[therefore akoyas which have only just stopped blinking are more likely to be a good round shape than any other pearl]

Good. I was using using shorthand when I said baroques are at the bottom.

I think Jeremy does get the top quality Kamokas. Why wouldn't he?
I didn't say that no one else got any top quality Kamokas!
I didn't even imply it. And some of you wholesalers had the foresight to become his customers. Trend setters for the sustainable pearl movement. I hope you all sell them well. and that it is the wave of the future.

Hmm... I just realized what I typed didn't make sense compared to what happened at the office. When I opened the box in the office, under flourescent lighting, I saw colors, not washed out. But this afternoon, in my kitchen it looked washed out. I am assuming it was the combination of flourescent and sunlight from the garden window that did it.

I have purchased several items from PearlParadise and have been delighted with the goods and the service provided, and, therefore, am a staunch supporter of Jeremy's; indeed, I hope to be buying from PP again soon.

However, I find your statement to be a generalisation in dismissing all European sellers as not having such good quality pearls as they do in the U.S.
As for pricing, by the time I have added all the extra costs imposed by third parties, the end price of the goods will be the same or cheaper if I buy within the EU.

Hi Sueki and other members and guests to this forum,

it was not my intention to make you think that European sellers do carry lesser qualities, especially not the ones who are connected with PP and buy their pearls from Jeremy to sell them later on as finished jewelry. What I meant was what other members here do mention as well, namely that to get the biggest choice one has to buy from the biggest online seller of pearls who is able to get that kind of quality. Jeremy had to collect those pearls over months to get together the quantities needed, and he has the largest choice and the best prices, so if for example I would buy from Select Trader.de or UK I probably can get a fine Exotics strand if I am lucky but I never ever can get the low price I get through PP, that?s a fact. And of course I know that the price given from an European seller includes V.A.T as well. However, as no one can convince me otherwise than that Jeremy gets the pick of the very best pearls available, I?ll stick to PP, TPO or some other of our American online sellers. Hope I haven?t offended anyone, it was not what I wanted to do.;)

Here are some photos. I did the best I could.

I was wondering Knotty has been quiet lately. She made me snort sometimes.

Me too. I miss her very much.

K.P. where are you?

Cathy, nice pearls! wear them in good health !!!

Cathy, that is a very special strand. I think a neck shot is in order! ;)

WOW Hanaleimom! FREAKIN' GORGEOUS!!! I could totally see the metallic quality of your exotics. Had I known the earrings were that metallic, I would have ordered them. Thanks so much for taking these pics. I'm craving for my exotics to come!

I don't mean to add more wood to the fire, or stoke the flames if you will, but why was Knotty Panda banned?

Cathy, your photos are gorgeous! I have tried and tried to capture the beauty of my strand but I just don't seem to be able to master the photography. Until I do, I won't post the bad photos as I don't want to offend Jeremy and his wonderful staff with shots that do not do justice to their work and artistry...

I originally didn't intend to post photos, partly feeling the same way. But I have, in the past as well as current, found members' photos very helpful in making my purchase decision. I tried to reciprocate. I do better with point and shoot landscape photos. :p

Hi Pearl_dreams,
The strand is 8-8.5mm. Green earrings are 7.5mm. Silvery white earrings are 8.8mm.

A quick note on the strands, since so many people here like to reknot and rearrange their pearls (especially you, Cathy;)). The thread must be 'F' or the pearls will slip over some of the knots. Most of the pearls are drilled at either .8 or .9 mm on one side and .7 mm on the other. They were intended as earring pairs, not necklace material.

WOW Hanaleimom, your pearls just GLOW! Thank you for showing those beauties.
Enjoy them in good health and happiness :)
