Greetings! I’m so happy to have come across this forum in my search for info about my ring. What a lot of great information I see here!

I recently purchased this beautiful ring, which appears Victorian to my eye. . There are no hallmarks but I believe the ring was stretched at one point since it is now a US size 9. There is thinning at the back of the band and maybe the hallmark disappeared during a possible stretching process? The seller didn’t know anything about the ring. Acid testing the gold indicates 10K-12K. Seller called it a “potato pearl“, is this correct? Is it possible this is a Scottish river pearl? Thanks so much for your time and attention, all opinions and suggestions are much appreciated!

Hi, I'm still hopeful for a bit of help. :)
I don't even know if it's freshwater/saltwater, cultured/natural, etc.
Thanks!!

I hoped someone who knows antiques would come along and comment on the ring. It is an attractive and interesting ring.

"Potato" just describes the shape of the pearl. I can't tell just from looking at the the photo what species it is or where it comes from. You would have to have a lab that specializes in pearls look at it, such as the GIA. It could be natural.

Hi Bluumz,
Thank you for sharing photos of your beautiful ring! You might like to read about "candleing" to see if a nucleus shows. (No real candles involved, just strong light. Under natural pearls thread here:
You would need lab testing to identify if it's natural, but as the back of the ring is open, you may be able to see and photograph a dark center.

It looks rather Victorian to me, too, but it's impossible to tell if it's a Scottish river pearl from photos. A lab might be able to tell you. I'm not sure if it's worth the cost. Enjoy the ring. It could be a natural.

My husband thinks the ring is hand crafted as it is slightly asymmetrical.
