Disconcerting Pearl Professor Article

I keep forgetting to go over there. Interesting. If I read right the guy knows the US Pearl market is a dead duck because the Chinese can't sell US anywhere near what they were selling us just a couple of years ago. The warehouses are backed up.

My personal experience is that the commercial pearl tent sellers have more packed in bags then they have out. I saw one of my used to be favorite dealers packing his truch. There must have been another 100 bags in there. He's not my favorite because he doesn't have anything new, which seems to mean he is running out of $$ to buy or contract for any more pearls.

Some businesses are doing better, like online sales, while down for some, are up for others!

How is Honora doing? Don't answer that, write to the professor and use a handle for the public name. It looks like he will keep you anonymous if there are any business trends/worries on the horizon. I would imagine online sales are brisk. What other kind of sales do you do? I'd love to hear, what the publlic news is.
 
I think it reads from a very specific perspective. The dealer could be one trading in white or gold South Sea, or possible akoya. Those markets certainly have tightened. It is expensive to hold South Sea pearl inventory, and akoyas keep losing ground to freshwater.

The way it was written, describing the situation between the farmers and the banks, shows that the dealer is in Japan.
 
Thanks for explaining that. The article was a little too vague for me to get it. Then I revise my comment to say I think the schlocky commercial pearls are not doing well either. What do you know about that?
 
I just pull him into my Google Reader as I always forget to get over to that site. The pearl world is certainly feeling the pinch just like everything else in Jewelry, but there are still some people making things happen... Honora, PP, etc.

As for what you were suggesting about your friend, it is harsh to say, but not having anything new, nor a model for getting out of dated merchandise isn't exactly a recipe for success.

Online is certainly a growth area and will play a key role in the future of the industry (although, we do not sell direct online), but it is not the end all be all of jewelry. There are plenty of people that create an onlne pearl business without building authority with their customers and quality product that do just as poorly (if not worse) as B&M stores...

Like all other sectors, pearls will have its share of struggle during these challenging times, but the smart vendors (both overseas and in the US) will see light at the end of the tunnel. All I can say for Honora, is you will not see us abandoning the Freshwater Pearls we love anytime soon.

Sorry, saw your posts after my comment posted... It definitely read as a specific market and think it was a bit on the dramatic side to try and post it as something spanning the entire industry.

As for the pain in suffering in schlocky and commercial Akoya... I just dont see how it can compete when you compare comparably if not favorably priced FW...
 
Good, glad we are not alone! Besides Facebook wont let us change our page name from Honora Freshwater Pearls anyway... Guess we are just going to have to stick with it :)
 
The lifeblood of a blog is scuttlebutt, and Pearl-Professor began his just when everything came to a screeching halt. Business may continue well for commodities such as the ever-rounder-and-shinier CFWPs but that's exceedingly dull reading. Has to be extremely frustrating for the conscientious reporter.

'Nautilus Pearl' could not have entered center stage at a more opportune moment!
 
The lifeblood of a certain kind of blog is scuttlebutt... in my mind the right kinds of blogs are more about creating quality content for a targeted audience. It's a more challenging goal, but the end results are usually better for everyone.

I've peaked at his blog from time to time, but struggle with both the tone and the anonymity... It is one of the things I tend to like about sites with Facebook, I find people take a very different tact when their name and face is right next to their comment.

What is the story with the Nautilus Pearl?

Here you go. You won't find more speculation on the subject anywhere else. Anticipation for GIA's substantiation of their single certification of such a pearl has coincided with "The Great Pearl Scuttlebutt Vacuum" to attract a bright spotlight.

That's the point!He'd never have gotten a lot of that info, if he weren't anonymous.

I sat down today and read every post since last August. The only one using a name is the Olga Sxzlieaplaya, or what ever it is. (Sorry Olga, but that was cruel, Olga would have been just fine.) Not that I don't think she would bore her eyeballs over here to read this.

He seems to be riding the crest of the wave on most of his proclamations. If you read it, you will see some you-heard it-here-firsts from over that blog. Since Michael and I and so many of us are are into CFWP, today's post is more about Japan than China. We have been watching the slide, of Japan's pearls. Now the poster thinks the funeral will be soon. And then it will time to start over.

He has an RSS feed. I put it on my tool bar. This seems a good time to check in over there every week or so. We need comprehensive knowledge because things are dire for so many. Sadly, but it puts investors in a very strong place, right?

There is an industry site, nationaljeweler.com where people say some truly horrible things under the guise of anonymity and it can often lower the level of debate as much as it occasionally brings heard it first information...

In truth, I am judging this based on the few articles I have read and am leaving this post to do exactly what you did... read the blog from start to finish.

While what you are saying about this relating to Japan is probably correct, it needed to be said in the post. Making such a sweeping and overly dramatic statement about the whole pearl industry isnt helping anyone...

I would rely on TPP to not do that. If he does, I'll scold him from over here. I do believe he is a professional and it isn't professional to attack competitors. He teases and makes cracks as a way of putting it out there, but is never on a personal attack level, himself. Maybe a bit snarky once in a while, but funny snark. Don't you think?
 
I am about halfway through the site and I have to eat my words... while I still dont agree with the need for anonymity for anyone other than the sources, most of my problems are with commenters who hide their identity and not The professor...
