I started to have a surf around etsy and did a search on tahitian pearls. This is the first listing I looked at
Now call me a bit of a suspicious person but I don't think these are Tahitian....

Coin pearls (FW) - nucleated with a button shaped disc... but at least they are priced as such.. unlike these which aren't labelled incorrectly, but the PRICE!!!

Yeah, those types of sellers are everywhere on the internet, including Etsy. Misinformed, or misinforming. There are also a lot of valid sellers, but I guess it always pays to know your stuff. Nerida, there was no link on your post. I want to see!

perhaps the "Tahitian" with the coin pearls refers rather to their colour?
The second picture are dyed freshwaters, if real at all...

The price for the coin bracelet is ridiculous. I wonder if this seller ever can succeed in selling any pearls at all. But may be the ? are not English pounds?!

Yep, fraud and misinformation abound on etsy, too--I have reported a few most flagrant--mass produced goods, not just jewelry, sold as handcrafted, so unfair to honest sellers. I email the seller first and ask them about their items and why same is on Chinese website? Usually get no reply at all. Not much time to spend doing Pearl Police work!

Ha-ha....I know they're not Tahitian....that's just the name I gave them because they have that color.

I do know my pearls, but I was using some poetic license in the title.

An informal group called the "Pearl Police" picked up on your listing; they go around on websites and ebay and find listings where various levels of "poetic license" have been taken in descriptions, and report them, then discuss them, not really good PR for you. I just volunteered as another etsy seller to bring it to your attention.

Well personally, they need to lighten up. I've been making jewelry for over 13 years now. I know my names. My tags even say "freshwater pearl". Geez....

But the question is, does everyone who buys them know them? Thanks, Pattye. I usually just skip over those types of things, and do not include anything in my treasurys (unless by accident) that is misrepresented or untrue. Maybe I'll be more police-like in the future, because I go through a lot of items to create on of those.

Sheryl, we all know by now that many of the buyers need educating--so it's no help at all when someone has this attitude. I wouldn't report her listing for this, but Etsy depends on other sellers reporting fraud-------so I think alot slips through. I still feel like one who is "tattling" and it"s uncomfortable; that's why I contact the seller first to see how they respond.

I don't think the person who made the "Tahitian treat" deserved to be singled out though. Anyone who buys a decorated comb deserves what they get.

Being one of the consumers that are slowly learning what to look for and how to spot it, sellers such as this frustrate me as their "poetic license" may cause someone to pay for something they are not receiving. I for one, tend to read very quickly and I would be likely to miss the freshwater tag.

Yes, it is buyer beware but this does not help build public confidence in buying online.
