Just returned from the 2025 Shanxiahu World Pearl Conference (SWPC), where leaders from around the world gathered to discuss the future of pearls. From cutting-edge farming techniques to market trends and AI driven processing centers, it was an eye-opening experience that reinforced just how dynamic and global our industry truly is. I’ve shared some key takeaways and insights on my website below:

Thank you for all the information Yens! Wow, that looks like quite an event, and the sorting machine is really amazing.

This was a fascinating read, thank you for sharing.

Like @jeg , I found the sorting machine really interesting!

One comment you made was that the sorting machine is specifically designed for the Chinese market - just wondering why its standards wouldn’t be applicable to a more global market? And I’m also wondering whether / when a company like Mikimoto would start using AI if they don’t use it already?

The Japanese pearl industry is significantly more traditional compared to China. In contrast, China produces an immense volume, estimated at 1,000 to 1,500 tons annually, making machine assistance essential for sorting such large quantities of pearls. However, I don't foresee companies like Mikimoto adopting sorting machines anytime soon. It's hard to imagine a Hanadama-grade strand being matched purely by automated systems. That said, drilling machines are a different matter. They offer practical benefits and are far more likely to be integrated into both markets.
