Works for me. I just wanted to ask as I'm still new here LOL :)
 
Even the title of the thread works - The De-Stash Project!...
...although Stash Bash works for me as well; when you get down to it we've even covered a discussion about materials. What a fun group, you know?

What happens next? Does Caitlin make it a Sticky , or something?
 
CathyK, I've been here 5yrs, and still feel like a Newbie ;-) because there's always something I don't know, but a more loving group I doubt you'll find. Questions are all good!

I just was worried Narcissa might want her thread back ... As for me, I'm having a grand time learning here ... and yes, the people are lovelier than the pearls :)

Lisa is right. This forum was started because I kept showing my commercial grade pearls made up into necklaces with other stones when everyone else was buying perfectly round pearls (or almost round) and never mixing them, as the beaders who use commercial pearls were doing. Gotta tell you, round pearls were not my thing from the day I got here! Anyway round pearl people would comment on my inferior pearls, and I would say, "I am just a lowly beader but ........." because I really am a genuine beader with close to 50 years experience beading non-pearls mostly. Thus the name of the forum started as joke on me.

The designs in this forum are now so elegant and superb pearls are being used, so I guess Lowly Beaders went far beyond my ambitions. In fact newbies sometimes ask if a better name could be used!

I am thinking about starting a "Lowly Beader's thread, just to bring the "lowly" concept back and maybe collect a few more beaders like Ash and others who rarely post anymore. Maybe attract a few other people who go for the commercial grade pearls. And maybe even use wire on their finished products! Except sellers like John Tu, have absolutely fantastic commercial grade pearls, so it will NOT be the same as 10 years ago!

As for round pearls, I have since acquired a gorgeous pistachio Tahitian with no blemishes, and the very first metallic white necklaces with round pearls, both from Jeremy. My first round pearls! Jeremy also gifted or presented me with a lot of great pearls that are now in my beading stash. (anyone remember the special he had when you could buy like 6 strand bunches really, really inexpensively? They came in several qualities and colors which totally upgraded my beading stock.

To this day, I still have a beader's sensibility and always go for the strongest thread and simple styles one can wear anywhere, even into the ocean. I now use better quality pearls, but they are still always freshwater pearls. I happen to still have a huge stash, more than I will ever, ever use. Maybe I should post a photo of my workroom with hanging pearls everywhere!

Oh dear! Now the reminiscences are flowing! Sorry, but I am going to let them flow.
I know I am the first person who asked for longer ropes in 2004, I was laughed at because no one was making them long. Someone who no longer posts jeered at me saying they were "grandmother's pearls". Exactly. I even used the name for my wholesale card. I also started commenting on the beauty of baroque pearls as mine always were, which also was sneered at by the round pearls crowd, who said they would never sell, LOL. However, Jeremy being the pioneer that he is, soon brought in baroques.And has continued to bring cutting edge pearls to this forum, ever since.

In more recent years I was the first person to ask for rose gold. It was very hard to find at the time, but now several years later, it is the third color metal in many collections. I yammered about it all over the forum until a couple of people sent me some old clasps from the turn of the 20th century- AND Jeremy and Hisano made me a rose gold ring with my "Guaymas purloined Pearl" with earrings to match!

Yikes. Sorry to go one about the old days on pearl guide. Maybe this kind of reminiscence should go into a separate thread, too.

Keep up the reminiscence, please, Caitlin! As a newcomer, it is really interesting to see how things evolved.

I am not a huge fan of round pearls, either. I prefer baroques, keshi, etc. I love graduated strands, which seem to be making a comeback, and way too many people told me they were "granny pearls", tacky, old fashioned, you have it. Watching how fashions come and go is always interesting.

I admit I don't have a pearl stash - yet! You post photos of your pearls and I will post pictures of my gemstone stash :)
 
Yes PLEASE to both ... photos of Caitlin's workroom/pearl stash and to photos of Lady_Disdain's gemstone stash ... no rules, remember? I too have more gems and rock/mineral stash than pearls currently, but am enticed by the idea of mixing that stash with beautiful pearls ... and we all know what I love from my screen name, although I have yet to find a pearl I didn't love :)
 
It is too dark for gemstone photography, so here is a general photo of the stash. The cases are stashed 3 deep. The black ones are good faceted stones, the plastic ones are cabs. The box on top has smaller stones and random things, the envelopes are the ones that didn't fit the black case, the little ziplocks are cabs.

Everything there is stash. My eyes were too big for my stomach and I thought I could sell, but that was a miserable failure for me for many reasons. Now I make presents and sometimes donate them as rewards in recovery programs.

Oh, how wonderful Lady_Disdain and Caitlin ... now I know why I have trouble putting things together ... I don't ... have ... ENOUGH stash :) THANK YOU ladies for the delightful glimpse into your inner sanctums. Had I such a cave, I'd curl furl my wings, curl my dragon's tail around my nose, rest my head on the largest pearl and close my eyes :)
 
Great stuff! Caitlin has been a trend setter and no one knew until the next wave came along to prove her point I have dearly loved rose gold for years. Unfortunately, now that it's easier to get, gold is expensive. :)

I too am a newbie and very dull in my pearl taste to boot, it is lovely to learn more and more about pearls and be 're-educated' in such a creative way and I love seeing what all these creative and innovative P-G members get up to with their pearls and other beads...

Yes, it is an extra bathroom we never finished used for storage. I finally got all the storage out of there and under people's beds etc. and took it over. Over on the left is a pile, and I mean a pile of unfinished projects. Everything else is stash. Including give aways. I need to give some of this away and now maybe I can gift some strands to members! I doubt I could sell any of it it even If I had the patience to set up a shop and stay up with it and be nice all the time, so people will come back.

If anyone wants some commercial grade pearls ,I have a really big stash you can call on! Lots of peach and white, not so much lavender, but I have lavender up the wazoo in personal wearables. Now I just want purple pearls or nothing.

There is another wall I didn't show that has all my necklaces that I used to wear and now, not so much, plus the broken ones and ones people gave me, most of which are broken, but I like to walk in the room and see that wall.

The right hand wall has all my threads there is a piece of a big plastic bag showing in the front right that has all the threads I experimented with on my way to finding Powerpro. It is a gallon bag full of linen, hemp, and upholstery thread and sinew and more, I tried everything. My first beading string was monofilament fishline. I knew nothing when I got the bead fever.
