What is this metal component called? And, is it necessary?

Been eyeing on a couple round pearls and thinking of making this style (web pic). However, I don't know the name of this metal component so I don't know what word to search. After browsing pages over pages on Rio and Etsy, I thought I should probably ask here. Besides, is it necessary? Will the gliding pearl be fine after years of wearing without its protection? I am talking about everyday wear. Love to hear the answers. Thanks!

These are called Grommets, and readily available online. They make a very neat clean finish on these larger holed pearls.

Bead core, bead eyelet, bead grommet. Some reinforcement of the hole would be advisable for everyday wear of a pearl on a chain, since the metal is harder than the pearl and could ultimately cause damage.
