Strange abalone shell/(possible) pearl

I was at the beach and found two strange abalone shells that had largish masses of shell like material (see right hand of picture. Both shells are noticeably thicker than a normal shell). Here is a pic of one of them. I’m wondering if they are pearls or other sea creatures?

Wow, those are interesting! Could you please post photos of the back side of the shells? The outside may show holes where parasites have drilled through, then been covered by this material, though it doesn't look much like nacre at this point. I'm curious what others will say~
 
Thanks for the reply Pattye. It certainly doesn’t look like the abalone pearls I’m used to, although it does have some pearlescence.

It does look like the shell has some blister pearls on it. But whether or not they are made of nacre, that's the question.
 
I am going to attempt to clean them up. They are currently soaking in water. They seem to have quite a hard line scale on them. And tips?
