Question about black akoya pearls

Does the dying process for a black akoya pearl affect any aspect of its quality? For example, will it have less luster than a similar white akoya? Is a White akoya qualitatively better?
 
They're often dyed because they are lower grade to begin with. Poor color, mixed patches or low luster.

Bright, evenly matched white colors are more valuable.
