The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has a recorded online pearl class that I'm thinking of taking. It's 45 GBP, and you have a year to watch it. They have a bunch of other interesting classes on textiles and art, as well.

Nice! Thank you for sharing!

If you do decide to watch, it would be interesting to know if they fall in line with the gemmological sector in declaring porcelainous 'concretions' from conch, clam, cassis, scallop, melo melo, etc. as 'not true pearls.'

I just signed up for the course. There are 9 classes, each about 20 minutes long. The USD price ended up being about $57.

UPDATE: I just watched all the episodes. There's about 3 hours and 30 minutes of video total. It's mostly about jewelry through the ages, with only a little bit about the creation of pearls. They don't go into the nitty gritty of whether pearls are nacreous or non-nacreous. It's mostly about pieces that are in the V&A and other museums.

I felt the videos could have been a bit more professionally done, but I felt I got my money's worth. It was 3 1/2 hours of serious eye candy and unique jewelry designs. And I'll have these videos available to me for a year if I want to go back and rewatch them.
