Colour Through the Eyes of Everyone

Decided to post this here for reasons that are obvious when viewing the photos below!

The Nautilus Pearl thread took a detour with the appearance of Ammolite Ammonite fossils. (Ammonites are the dinosaur-age ancestors of the Nautilus, ammolite specimens occuring primarily in Alberta. Ammolite is fossilized nacre and was declared a gemstone in the 1981—very likely the world's rarest and most finite in supply. Like pearls and amber, it is organic in origin.)

AA-quality ammolite is iridescent in the full spectrum (red, yellow, blue) and shifts color depending on viewing angle, up to 360 degrees. My curiosity obligated me to acquire a couple of semi-finished rock specimens, with which we are extremely happy (ammolite is also highly valued by practitioners of feng shui for its powerful colors). As abalone is considered the most intensely colored and iridescent mother-of-pearl, it was suggested to compare in combination. First round goes to ammolite, clearly!

I thought it was pretty. Then you explained it. Now I think it's beautiful.

I wanted to give this thread a bump :-)

I love that old threads are listed at the bottom of the pages. They may lead to wonderful places.

Hi Kath! I hadn't seen it either, I was astonished too!

I do remember a wonderful run of abalone pearls when Antz started unloading his collection, a few years after this post...pretty amazing. Did you bid on any of them?
