Circled pearls: why do they grow like that?

Olga,

Love those Tahitians, great colors, and that you went for a 36" length! Not sure how I missed this thread for so long! Think the circles are great also! I have heard them described as "circles of love" to put a real positive spin on them.

This again goes back to the fact that the nuclei actually tickles the oyster. Circle is caused by the oyster rolling with laughter. Prove me wrong if you can.
Mikeyy--great explanation, you're the expert!

Some of us are glass half full. Right?

Oops- I missed this thread for a couple of weeks. Dfrey, Pearl Gully and Slraep are correct. ZE and cfwp. I have never head of pink south sea pearls! And I would be surprized to ever see any!

Okay, here we go again:
There was a post not too far back (kinda sounds like once upon a time huh?), and it said something like, "One of the most expensive SS's are white with a natural pink tint, but they are very rare."

I've never seen them either but I've been salivating over the idea ever since I read that.

I've seen one. Once.

Hey Mikkey:
Don't suppose ya've got a picture?

No I don't. I was in Paspaley's shop in Broome many years ago with a friend in the pearl business who's from L.A.. I wasn't involved with pearls at all at the time. Just nuclei. But my friend fell in love with this pearl. It was not set. Just a loose pearl. He told me how it was unusual. I remember the pink hue still only because he took the time to point it out to me. I also remember him getting the item number for the pearl. A couple of days later we were sitting in Nick Paspaleys office in Darwin. And he brought out the item number and asked about purchasing it. He eventually did. I can't remember the price, But it was expensive it seemed to me. But my friend was determined to buy it. I don't know what he ever did with it. And I haven't seen him in years. But I've seen one for sure.

Great. That makes two of us. Maybe I will have to make a trip to Broome one of these days.

Everyone should go to Broome at some point. Its remote. And for some reason its a place that you can feel very relaxed. Maybe because there isn't much there. But after you are there a few days you succumb to what they call "Broometime" ;)

I can believe they would get an occasional pink- but the necklace above is all matched circle, the same size. Like the mythical Lops, it would be a quest of a lifetime and hugely expensive to put together a necklace like the above- and the disappointment when they aren't SSPs, but CFWPs.:(

Actually, South Sea pearls with a slight rose overtone command some of the very highest prices. I'm not implying that the pearls Leigh is discussing are SS, though it is possible.

I think somebody recently said their pearl collection was becoming a shrine to the Shepherd boys. What they don't know about pearls might not be worth knowing...

Olga, love the colors on your baroque Tahitians - just gorgeous! :)
Mikeyy, great explanation of how circles are formed on pearls! :D

Well I am only telling the truth as I know it. And lets make sure that we let this story be the official explanation. Again, Until someone can prove me wrong.

Have to agree with you, Mikeyy.
Those lines and rings I have are from a lifetime of rolling around laughing......:D
Definitely chuckle lines, NOT wrinkles......;)
