Calling rope owners

The first necklace I made myself was 10 - 12 mm. FW. I made it about the same length as your, Sheryl, never wore it without doubling and never really wore it much at all until I took apart and made a choker instead. So I would agree that larger pearls are not as well suited for ropes.

I will try and post some rope ideas. IMG_2026.jpgIMG_2011.jpgIMG_2022.jpgIMG_2030.jpg

Pearl-man's post reminded me of my 45" multi-color rope. Here is it styled two ways.

Knotted:

Doubled and twisted:

This is turning out to be a great inspirational collection! Thank you to everyone who's playing along :)

I don't think there are any rules, you can have what ever size, length and colour you want. It's surely wrong to be dogmatic and prescriptive when it is a matter of personal preferences

oh, i love the 144 incher knotted while also wrapped around a couple of times! i wonder if my 100-inch 5-7mm (or so, small, uniform, roundish white pearls) rope is long enough for that? mostly i just wear my long rope wrapped around my neck 3-4 times along with a couple of shorter single strands to mix it up.

my 36 inch color-shifting rope i keep wearing as a bracelet, so i can look at it. and lately i've just not been getting enough of the two baroque blue akoya strands from overstock.com, fastened end to end and then doubled around my neck. one of these days i'll invest in some from pp, but meanwhile, the cheapy akoyas still have some marvelous luster and shine!

juliebeth -- that was done with the 75" section so you should be more than fine with 100 inches!

I do have one rope, only a few knots as it was meant to be temporary and I never got around to finishing it. Baroque akoyas 9mm, about 60" long.

Here are the pearls...

And here is a photo from 2009 where I am wearing it...

Nice! Are you going to finish it or use the pearls for something else?

In Bas's photos, the rope is twisted like a torsade. How do you do that and keep the twisted look? Does it shift and tighten up, choking you? I'm asking for instructions.

Pearlman, I love your rope. Are those Mississippi pearls?

I'm guessing it is done with what is called a shortener - a very misnamed bit of kit which allows you to fasten together two loops. They are usually 0 shaped. here is one f_vermeil_shortener_use.JPG

I put the pearls together to wear for a talk and that is the only time I wore them. Eventually, they will be made into necklaces and sold. Getting my former laundry room/new studio organized is the first step in getting my little pearl business back in operation. It's a slow crawl because I have very little free time. :)

Whicker -- if you are referring to my 45" multi-colored strand -- it is SUPER easy. I don't know if you would call it a "torsade" officially. The pearls are the same mm so it's just a super simple twist:

a) Unclasp the strand. b) Fold in half and twist until you get the tightness/look you like. c) Put around neck. d) Fasten by placing the two ends through both sides of the loop made by folding the necklace in half. e) Fasten the clasp. Voila!

Since the pearls are the same size, closing the clasp in the end loop looks fine. I've done it where the pearls are graduated -- so the loop end has the largest pearls (since the loop is formed by the very middle of the necklace with the largest pearls) and the clasp end has the smallest pearls and that doesn't look good when it's closed (if you can visualize what I mean).

The twist stays fine and doesn't get "chokey" at all with this strand. It's easy and gives a totally different look.

Thanks Bas and Wendy! I'm learning so much from you and the pearl guide mentors. :)

What a fun conversation! Here's my first ever neck photo~the 109 inch rope wrapped 5 times. Pearls are approx 9.5-10.5mm

Number 1 reason to own a rope (or 2 or 3)~a rope is inherently sensual, appealing to the touch with silky shapes or textures, to the eye with unique colors and overtones, to the ear with musical clinks and clanks; all stress reducing properties! (Just my opinion. :))

Nicely put opinion with which I happen to agree :) ps, great neck shot of your lovely rope!
