Etsy seller's pearls

Update - Convos between me and the seller this morning. She maintains her postion. They were a nice pink-ed strand of freshwaters anyway and similar to another being sold at TheGemBee so I wouldn't say they are overpriced. Anyway sold on 17 March.

Me: ...Oh and the $199 pearls you have listed, while fabulous, they aren't tahitians, are they? Tahitians don't come in that colour - a cloudier silver grey, yes, but these look like premium chinese freshwaters to me. Very lovely though I must say.

Seller: I am not sure what you mean about the tahitians. They often come in white also gold, silver and plum. I have a $2800 strand of white Tahitains pearls in my store now. I bought these from a man who my Father does business with for 43 years and owns the pearl beds in Tahiti that he grows the pearls in. I am actually going next fall to Tahiti to see them on my way to Australia. So I trust his word. The pearls sold to a girl who was making her bridal necklace with them.

:)

Sigh. Oh boy. So many people know someone who gets them straight from the farm; where can I run into these people? Seems like they're thick on the ground somewhere...

That last sentence was in case You got all excited and wanted to see pix!
No doubt her father's friend buys them from the natives. oh. sorry. he grows them.

Grows pearls, or natives? Or friends?

You already have! You know me, and I got my Tahitians straight from Josh who grows them himself :D

Somehow I don't think that's what you meant...

Good one, Karin! And if I make it to Ruckus I might meet a couple of farmers, as well as their friends!

It would be so fun if you could be there too, Lisa!

God willin' and the creek don't rise! I sure would love to meet all you wonderful people, it'd be the treat of a lifetime!

Gosh, how do y'all figure out what pearls come with you (drool, I'm imagining what I might see)...must be you have to balance bringing all your favorites against what you (hope) anticipate carrying home. Joy,
Joy, joy

It is the claims about Chinese freshwater pearls being straight from the farm that are the laughable ones. Jeremy has explained how that works many times. The farmers send the pearls to processing plants, some of which are open to huge wholesale buyers, but not to people who buy one strand or one pair of earrings. Or even 10 of them. I think it has to be in the hundreds of pieces at least.
