To Pink or Not to Pink?

Decisions, decisions... Which is better, natural white color akoya pearls or "pinked" akoya pearls? Pinking can be dramatic, but more often than not, the tint is a gentle pink that looks white against the skin.

This photograph is an excellent example of the difference between the two. Something to think about if you are planning to invest in a good strand of akoya pearls.

Pearls have an age-old allure and men have not been impervious to their charms. Historically, they were worn as a sign of wealth and rank by kings and maharajas, as well as female royalty and members of the aristocracy. Pearls as exclusive female adornment grew with the advent of the cultured pearl. Men were limited to purchasing pearls for the ladies in their families, with the rare exception of a pearl stick or tie pin for themselves.

A saltwater pearl is a calcium concretion (can be nacreous or non-nacreous) produced by a saltwater mollusk that lives in a saline/marine environment.
