OSAKA ? A 222-meter-long pearl necklace, certified by Guinness World Records as the world?s longest, is on display at a Hanshin department store in the city of Osaka.

The necklace, which weighs about 20 kg and is comprised of 28,000 pieces of 8 mm pearls, was presented by the Shima Tourist Association in Mie Prefecture in hopes of invigorating the local community as a birthplace of pearl cultivation.

Local citizens and tourists contributed to creating the necklace by threading each pearl, and the project was completed in 2010 after three months. The necklace, which is not for sale, will be displayed through next Tuesday.

A woman who visited the exhibition marveled at its extraordinary length, saying, ?all pieces are totally connected to each other.?

The project broke a record previously held by the city of Uwajima, Ehime Prefecture, whose necklace measured 187 meters.
