PearlNetWorld.com reports:

“1 tonne nucleated Chinese freshwater pearls produced in 2004
26/05/2005
More than 1 tonne of bead-nucleated Chinese freshwater pearls were reportedly produced in 2004 by Guangdong Shaohe Pearl Co Ltd in Guangdong Province, China. Of this production, 40 percent were round bead-nucleated pearls and 60 percent comprised flat bead-nucleated in various shapes and mabes, general manager of the company, Xie Shaohe, told Jewellery News Asia. While declining to disclose details, including size and price, of the pearls, he said that they were of fine quality and were sold to large pearl dealers in Zhejiang and Jiangsu in China and in Hong Kong Mr Xie has been conducting research into the cultivation of round bead-nucleated freshwater pearls for more than a decade. However, in the face of the high oyster mortality rate and high risk involved in producing round pearls and, on the other hand, the strong demand for flat bead-nucleated pearls, he has decided to devote more attention to the latter in order to increase their output. He expects the company's total production of bead-nucleated freshwater pearls to be maintained at slightly over 1 tonne in 2005 but to go up gradually in the years ahead.”
