You have to take the thread and separate the strands at the end that make up the thread..untwist it...for about 2 - 3 inches..then you take a really sharp knife and scrape along the thread (that now looks like a tassel) .. you gently scrape the fibers until the threads are very fine...then you take glue and paint it lightly and twist it back into a point..so you end up with a 2 inch or so needle... You can find Youtube videos that show them doing this with silk ..
