working in jewellery and gemstone wholesale and retail makes you collect weird things :) its a fun project most of my friends think im crazy trying to collect them but they fascinate me they show how a pearl grows sometimes you see what got to make the pearl like a snail trail or little mussels in de back of a abalone

Here is a MASSIVE blister we have in our museum. The shell belongs to our native "Rock Scallop" shell (Spondyolus calcitrans). The shell weighs almost 1 kilo...the size of the blister is 3.5 x 2.0 x 1.4 cm... biggest natural blister we've obtained from these waters.

BTW...thanks for sharing your collection of natural blisters :) with us!

Hi Daniel - the bird is amazing !!

what is No 4 ? - the lustre is out of this world

I have a big conch like that (but no blister.....) - it lives in the garden now !

Thanks for posting them

douglas thats an amazing piece !

the orange one is a cassis cornuta shell from the Philippines

its a great piece because you see how the animal was trying to push it out of there. last month i got a really little one like this a cowrie 2 cm shell the moment i cleaned it with water the 4 mm pearl came of :S so that one was found just in time :)

here is another picture of the cornuta with a cassis pearl in front of it

Paua ablone shell

Paua ablone shell

Daniel, I spotted this while on Ylang23's website (the most fabulous albeit outrageously priced designer jewellery site). It appears abalone shell has gone mainstream direct to the Hollywood set.

Check out Gurhan's collection and imagine what more wonders can be created from abalone blister shells! Can't wait to see your own creations.

Dave speaks... I wait with bated breath.

I have been cataloging shells with attached pearls lately and will post a bunch shortly, but in the meantime.. your question from the abalone thread about the difference between blisters and conjunctions, here's a rare side by side from the same mussel. The blister has a critter living behind it, while the other was a loose pearl (perhaps 2) came out of the pearl sac elsewhere in the extrapalial space and became nacred to the shell.

Cool eh?

Here's the same shell from a different angle, with greater critical focus on the conjoined pearl.
