I wonder if a large carabiner locking clasp would work for her?
These are beautiful, though pricey:
Or the more common interlocking oval clasps, sometimes called "orbit clasps". See Bella Findings and elsewhere. These can be found in gold, silver and base metal.
Or perhaps a large hook and eye.
