As a timeless fashion accessory, beautiful gemstone jewelry has brightened-up the lives of women from all walks of life.

But before starting your own stunning bijouterie collection, it would be best to sharpen your gemstone knowledge through a short training program on jewels.

According to Leticia Paramita, head of education at Institute Gemology Paramita Jakarta, it would be best to know what your favorite jewels are before enrolling in a course. ?By truly understanding where your passion lies will make it easier for you to follow the learning process in a fun and pleasant way. Thus, the first thing we ask our students is: Which subject do you really want to learn about??

However, if you happen to possess a wide range of interest in jewels, it is best to first select the course you?re most passionate about. After that, you can enroll in other courses to further enrich your understanding of jewelry.

For ardent jewelry collectors, the training programs are divided into two subjects ? classes specifically catering to diamond enthusiasts and courses designed for colored gemstone devotees.

Leticia recommends the 10-session Diamond Grading for diamond collectors.

?In this class, students will learn how to evaluate diamonds according to the 4Cs (color, clarity, cut and carat weight) factors from the GIA International Diamond Grading System,? said Leticia about the course, which meets for three hours per session. ?Students will also learn how to compare real diamonds and diamond simulants.?

In the classrooms, students apply their skills into supervised practices using various testing instruments provided.

She highly advised that students should continue to the Advanced Diamond course, a three-session program that meets for three hours, where they will learn how real diamonds are enhanced using various treatment processes as well as how to recognize and analyze them.

?We will also study man-made synthetic diamonds,? said Leticia.

The topics discussed at the Advance Diamond course are vital for diamond collectors.

?Nowadays, the development of diamond treatment processes is very fast, therefore students need to be informed
on the latest developments in the diamond industry,? Leticia says.

As an independent educational organization, Institute Gemology Paramita actively follows ongoing trends in the world?s jewelry industry.

Aside from attending international gemological conferences and subscribing to the industry journals, it has jointly conducted research with distinguished international gemologists invited to the institute for intensive discussions and
collaborations.

Colored gemstones devotees can develop their expertise by taking either the comprehensive Color Stones course, which runs for 10 sessions (three hours per meeting), or much shorter training programs on Rubies, Sapphires or Emeralds.

A wide array of colorful gemstones students will learn in the comprehensive color stones course.

The courses on colored gemstones educate students on the various types of colored stones in general, such as rubies, sapphires, emeralds, alexandrite and jade among others.

?In the colored stones course, they can learn how to identify specific colored stones and how to recognize and analyze natural, synthetic, treatment and imitation color stones,? she said.

On the other hand, the Ruby and Sapphire course, which runs for three sessions (three hours each), and the Emerald class that lasts for two sessions (each for three hours) were created on account of the high demand from students who were solely fascinated by specific types of colored stones.

There is also a five-hour Pearl Grading program for those interested in collecting exquisite pearls.

?Students will learn how to grade pearls according to the Seven Value Factors by the GIA as well as how to identify treated and imitation pearls,? Leticia said.

All classes comprise 20 percent audiovisual theory presentation and 80 percent direct practice using various testing instruments provided by the institution. Each class is limited to 15 students to ensure comfort when conducting exercises.

?This learning approach is specifically designed for Indonesian students who prefer to apply their knowledge directly in the classroom. It?s actually the best way to accurately grasp what they have learned by applying their skills under supervised practice,? Leticia said.

For those in need of a quick course on jewelry can take three-hour Basic Diamond and Basic Colored Stones programs.

In the Basic Diamond course, students are exposed to general information on diamond properties and the 4C?s of diamond grading.

?Our Basic Colored Stones class offers an introduction on buying and selling colored stones. Students will learn how to identify real or synthetic stones, natural or treated colored stones, types of stone cuts, colors recommended by experts as well as the types of colored stones that are less popular in the market yet highly valuable among serious collectors.?

At the end of each course, students will take a final exam to obtain their certificate, which according to the institute, is recognized worldwide.

And during the teaching process, real diamonds and colored gemstones are provided in the classrooms.

?That way, students can actually have an authentic experience by practicing with real jewels on hand,? Leticia says.
