Re-stringing Bracelet

It did come out looking very nice, Wendy.

And it looks like it will be sturdy as well. Won't need restringing for a good while.

:) DwightSchrute, take a bow! That is one devoted husband. Not very many men would labor over this task for their wife the way he did.

I've written up my post for how to string a necklace with doubled PowerPro, but will need to wait for tomorrow for my daughter to be available to take the photos for me. She's off to watch a school play tonight.

Learning how to re-string the pearls was a good time. I had a good (and patient) teacher that put up with unplanned knots and stubby fingers. After one practice round on some plastic beads and one round of getting 80% through (before realizing we didn't have enough string), I felt pretty good-to-go.

The hardest part, by far, was getting used to where to put the tweezers (through the loop) when doing the knot. Also, I now know that for our little bracelet, I need 60 inches of string! Four hours of stringing with a great teacher and I can now keep my wife's bracelet in awesome shape for the rest of its life. Thanks again, Pearl Dream!

The way you did it is perfectly acceptable and a double or triple knot can be made by passing the pearls through more than once before pulling the threads tight. It's called a double half-hitch or something, but it works.

Great job!!! Very inspiring...I have a tahitian bracelet strung on silk that is looking like it needs to be re-strung already (dirty, frayed knots), and this is giving me the inspiration to go ahead and try it myself!!!

malakity, what size are your pearls? I did my 11-11.5mm black pearls with 20# moss green PowerPro but if yours are larger than that or if the holes are large, they may need the 30# size.

I think they are 9-11MM...I'll have to go back and look, I don't think that the holes are exceptionally large, but I haven't cut the bracelet apart yet either to get a closer look. Do you recommend I order both sizes powerpro just to be on the safe side? Also, are there any particular youtube videos you recommend for starters? I'm planning on replacing the silver ball clasp with a toggle while I'm at it, so I'll have to order that and wait for it to arrive before I can start in anyway. Thanks so much for the pointers!

Well it's been one day and I think I'll be re-stringing the strand again. It seems that using all the double knots when I re-strung them yesterday made the bracelet slightly too big. I'm afraid I'll have to remove one of the pearls after I gather some supplies. I guess I'll at least get to practice again soon!

DwightSchrute,
Before you remove the pearls, try using double overhand knots (not 2 knots on top of each other). Allow extra length of Power Pro (4 times the length of the bracelet plus another 15 to 20" should be plenty) to do this just like 2 knots on top of each other. Double overhand knots will be larger and the pearls won't slip through. It should not make the bracelet much longer. Use a tool to slip the knots closer to the pearl and tie. Hold both double strand of PowerPro and pull apart to help seat the knot closer to the pearl.

Here are some links of how to do double overhand knots. You just loop one more time, that's all.

I have just finished restringing my Freshadama necklace and and didn't have to use any doubling of knots.

DwightSchrute, I think maybe PP drilled your pearl holes larger than normal to accommodate the nylon thread you had requested.
I think you should get some 30# PowerPro (see Artbeads.com for that; they probably also carry gimp and wire needles) instead of doing any more doubling of knots, and move the large-bore pearls to the end again.

I did not teach DwightSchrute to use the double overhand knot method because every time I try it, it tangles, and the knot doesn't form smoothly-- I get a misshapen knot, sometimes with a loop sticking out. Probably just bad technique on my part, but if I can't do it, I don't teach it.

I'm going to upload my restringing thread momentarily in the Lowly Beaders Club forum.

I wish I would have checked this forum an hour ago! I just finished re-stringing it with the regular double knots and it fits/looks great! Maybe I'll give the PP#30 a try next time it needs to get done. At least I remember the technique I learned yesterday :)

Hello . For a large black strand we use. FFF if it fits. Double overhand works but takes to long and is not necessary with FFF .
Splitting the strands at the conclusion of the knot and a slight tug will tighten it up. As get as using a tool to draw the knot up use a large embroidery needle. use it new ! Or use 600 black sand paper to smooth the needle. Insert in a drill and hold the sand paper around it make sure you use 600 or higher. A very tiny knick in the needle near the point will drive you crazy when trying to guide the knot to the pearl. The silk stimulant "pearl silk" we have not used in black. Just for reference a knt is about 2mm . A standard neck Is 400 mm unfinished (16"). You will come really close if you add 2mm to the diameter of the bead times the number of beads.
On and on and on. One more .. One of the key features of silk is the capacity to decrease the diameter of the the thread by eliminating one of the twisted threads in a strand , . i.e. cutting it out and continuing if the holes get smaller for some reason in the same necklace. Making the thread thicker while stringing is another matter ;(.

Great job Dwight. It's so nice to see you take on this challange and do such a spectacular job.

Hey everyone,

It's been 3 days since I re-strung the bracelet and I'm having a bit of an issue. On Sunday I re-strung it removing 1 pearl to compensate for the increased size of the knots. Now, 3 days later, the bracelet has already stretched out to where it was when that pearl was included. Do I need to re-string using 1 less pearl? Or maybe a thicker power-pro thread?
