In my experience all the local Emiratis I have meet here have been very welcoming and open and keen to engage in conversation. Very much like how the Irish were before we had the economic boom then bust!
Shame there are not more expat's and locals on this forum from the UAE and Gulf.
How is your skin holding up? I thought we had one other person posting from Dubai.... If you could find some other pearly expats, point them at us!
Isn't ironic that the cultural home of Natural pearls and I'm the only posting about it? Shame really as would love if some of the old dealers got on here.
I do know RAK pearls review this board though so just they would particulate and participate in it show case more of their pearls and findings.
Skin wise you actually lose a lot of colour here as you go from your ac house to ac car to ac gym to ac office to ac everything so it's the same at when at home in the depths in winter - you stay where the environment is controlled temp wise. Destroys your skin quality though as the ac is harsh but hey the pay off of being an expat.
Ironically friends and colleagues think I've lost my (pearly) marbles in search of GNP's as know as heard of them as they are so hard to find here.

Yes, He didn't post often, but when he did he seemed to 'really have the goods', be quietly authoritative. He stuck in my mind. Aside from being knowledgable, the name TangoJhaveri stayed in my mind as being romantic.
Course 'Tango' could be pilot lingo for the letter 'T', as opposed to romantic.
Now I'll have to go back and see what he said...

Question though, why would anyone want to showcase pearls on a red background? I can't see the quality of the pearls for the retinal after-burn ;-)

Red silk was apparently the traditional way how pearls where shown in the Gulf
I adore Bangor and my baby sis got married there. That's correct on the British part but I do carry a Republic of Ireland passport too as my mum's side is from Southern Ireland (Cork and Longford). The Northern Irish suffer from a GB identity crisis where as the British government as openly stated they have no commercial interest what so ever in Northern Ireland (pronounced Norn Iron) they simply can't rid of us. English are English, Welsh are Welsh, Scottish are Scottish and Northern Irish are Northern Irish and all four have fantastically strong and unique personalties. I'm very proud to say Northern Irish over Irish mind and having lived on both sides of the border (Dublin for 9 years) I can say both countries have their equal advantages and disadvantages.
Having grown during the "Troubles" and having known and went to school with the majority of activists in it in Co. Antrim it certainly gave you a rounded out look on conflict and all perspectives but taught you where you are from is very much important indeed.

Hello Im from Bahrain and started pearl diving.
What is the best way to sell pearls ? I do have the pearls certified and dont wish to sell them to local jewlers as they would bring down the price very very low.
Can I sell them online?
They are natural pearls from Bahrain!
Can any one give me some advise.

We would love to see some photos.
There are a number of ways to sell natural pearls. We are not a sales site, and please do not directly advertise they are for sale here, but when people do post about pearls and their provenance, and put up photos, they begin to build up a presence on the internet. With pictures of your pearls and their certificates up, a lot of people will see them and anyone interested can contact you. If you keep up this hobby, you can build a fan base, here.
Beyond that, depending on quality, there are various grades of auction sites from eBay to Bonhams. It is a matter of finding your level. There are a couple of reputable sites that feature very good Bahraini pearls at high prices, with certifications. I think the sites may take a cut when sold, but not sure.
Anyway, I hope you will share photos and stories with us. Are you a native of Bahrain? How long have you been diving? Do you need special permits? How many oysters does it take to find a natural pearl? How do you do diving? Info like that would be extremely educational for the future. For one thing, you can establish that you are a legitimate diver, for instance. We know that is going on, but have not met anyone who does it yet.
I want to move this post to its own thread once it gets more information. That way people can find your thread easier than trying to remember which thread they saw this on.

Hello all my lovely pearl loving friends.
Quick update on my adventures of pearl hunting, that is Gulf Natural Pearls / Basra pearls, here in Dubai.
Friday is like our Saturday night here in the Gulf (UAE) as we work Sun - Thurs. Personally I love Fridays as the roads are quiet and lot of the human traffic stays at home and recently have gotten up for a crack of dawn drive around parts of the city you could never get near at normal day time operating hours (more on the crack of dawn drives in the future).
Got a call from the lads here to say tonight's the night for drinking and I was like no as the lingering feeling of exploring "Little Bombay" here in Dubai was still in my head...
If you can remember and as per the previous posts in this forum my visit to Exim jewellers in Bur Dubai had a hugely profoundly affect on me as that was the first time I got to see real Natural Gulf Pearls in their real form.
My mum's 60th is next week and having got her the present and pearls that I am happy with I wanted to see if I could get her the one really special present from this part of the world.
Went back down to little Bombay and this drove down myself as I wanted to make sure it was a journey I could repeat. Needless to say it is not a journey for the faint hearted but you soon get into the grove of driving like the locals do with zero regard to the laws of the road and hand on horn the whole way there.
I had my GPS on and eventually found the road that the pearsl where on. Ok now to park. Jeez 18,000 badly parked cars here, it's 38c and humidity creeping up. Right drop car off at small hotel valet and walk. I get lost immediately. My shirt is sticking to my back as I pound the pavements looking bewildered at the shop fronts trying to find Mr Jayesh F. Jhaveri's shop - turns out I've actually just walked past it twice like some sort of Benny Hill movie.
Ok my idea is this, lots of fabric dealers here so thinking buy a square of red silk and then go to see Mr Jhaveri and furnish him with several crisp Dhs1,000 notes currently burning a hole in my pocket.
Unfortunately in all my dilly dallying about by the time I circle back the shop is closed. All well it will be open tomorrow and now my driving down there mission is wickedly well accomplished I shall be loading up the Lancaster and heading back down there again tomorrow.
On a side note I asked around in a few other jewellery shops in the area (all packed all Indians in their 100's all haggling ferociously haggling over gold and little diamonds - it's another world entirely) - I asked who sells pearls here, Basra/Bahrain pearls - one chap said hang on only one man sells these and his name is http://www.gemstoneportal.com/Gemst...il/335-Al-Fardan-Jewellery-/View-details.html
BUT the best bit is he said that Exim (Mr Jhaveri) sells his pearls to him so this fact confirms Mr Jhaveri is the main supplier for GNP's. With that I am very happy to do business with him the future.

Great story, thread, and adventure in Bur-Dubai. You mention pearls tested in Bahrain. Could you kindly give an e-mail address or the lab location details where I can have my pearls tested? Thanks. Any idea as to how much do these labs charge for testing on a) natural or not, b) origin - Basra or Japan etc, c) age of the pearls, even if it is approx?, d) quality of the pearl on a scale of say 0 to 10 in terms of lustre/shine, shape, size etc and e) approx value of the pearls?
