edible?

Can anyone tell me if the feshwater unio family of mussels are edible? and if so very deliciously edible or edible only if you have to

I am trying to track down whether naturals could be a by-product of food gathering
 
In the US, they are used for shell nuclei. Even back in the day when they were used for buttons, they were searched for natural pearls. Mikeyy can answer the eatability question for you.

It is thought that the first pearls were found by people foraging for food. The folks in New Zealand are getting natural pearls from abalone meat processors, so you're on the right track. ;)

Amen! Mine are Unfortunate taste buds,too; also, salmon, no matter how seasoned or well-cooked, tastes like fresh blood in my mouth. I also can't taste flavors unless they're fully-fatted. Are yours the same Wendy?
 
Wow- I just want to say you ain't never had salmon unless you've had FRESH Alaskan salmon, but I don't know if even that would help- but then, I grew up eating seafood... Instead of turkeys, my family would have oyster bakes for Thanksgiving.
 
That's what everyone says, before I end up tasting fresh blood again (hey, that could be a good vampire movie title), so it must be an enzyme. Same thing happens with some sweetener that starts with...uh-oh, Sr moment, nuts!
