Someone offered to sell me a strand of Mikimoto pearls. She said the clasp is gold but does not know what karat. . The clasp is marked Miki Moto with the Miki on top and the Moto under it. So I am leaning towards thinking they are fake. She got them at a thrift store many years ago.

Your instincts are correct-- not Mikimoto. Nothing about them is of the quality of Mikimoto pearls. Not the pearls, not the clasp, not the Mikimoto mark, and not the way it is finished.
The clasp may not even be gold-- if gold, it should be marked 14K, 18K etc.

Definitely avoid!
