I came across a listing for this strand of extremely baroque pearls. The seller claims they're Akoyas and up to 10.5mm (not sure if width or length). What do you think? Are there freshwaters being made to look like this these days?

Hmmm they do look like Akoya to me - the sheen is similar to mine. And you can the tails that have been clipped. But the size seems very large for akoyas. Are these expensive? Reputable seller? Freshwater don’t usually have this color unless it’s a great dye job

They're around $100 (more than I'd want to pay for dyed freshwaters 😛 Even with a great dye job!) The seller deals in secondhand stuff, has great reviews, but I'm not sure they know a lot about pearls (like, they have a strand of those freshwaters with the flat sides priced higher than what looks like a classic round white Akoya strand). So ... I dunno!

Hmm. Honestly, if you loved them and didn’t really care what they were id say go for it. Otherwise I don’t think knowing that they possibly are a akoyas or a super rare type will change that. Pearls don’t keep a resale value I personally think emotional attachment to them is more important 😊

I don't know what they are, but I don't think they're Akoya. They remind me of souffle pearls except for the size (souffles would be larger).

They could be akoyas or freshwaters. I can't decide. However, $100 is a steal. The clasp alone might be worth more than that. It all comes down to do you like them.

Totally agree with BWeaves - a steal. Also, to me, the mystery is part of the fun! And they’re pretty!

Those are nice. They look like some of the "old" Cortez pearls we produced back in the early 2000's...I see what I think is mottling (or "hammering" as I prefer to call this optical effect). Back in those days we had lots of "gas giant pearls" with some of the same surface defects and coloration I see here. Wish I could have them in my hands!
So, just with that...I would get them for $100!
