Dyed?

Thank you again Wendy! Your explanation was wonderful and clear. I was contemplating a warming-up soldering iron. I had also considered boiling water. Of course there's much to think and plan for, like how to handle hot metal, and how fast one has to work. This leads me to "take a course", etc...
So bless you for your patience!

and sorry for hijacking the thread.

Lisa, you could use softer metal...you can get gold filled wire that is dead soft, for example. This would not harden as quickly as the half-hard GF wire.

How dark s it? Is it cofined to he hole. Could it be where the pearl was marked for the drill hole?

Hmmm, I suppose it's possible, it's only on the top of the pearl and not at the bottom, and it is right around the drill hole. It is a slightly darker, orangeish color, which you should be able to see on the photos (probably best on the first few pics I posted). I don't see any other darker spots or unusual color on any areas of the rest of the pearl.

Anyone else have an opinion?????
