Duties and taxes in US

Would anyone know if there are duties and taxes to be paid in US if a jewellery item containing pearls is shipped from another country? (Value over 2K). My friend would like to send something to me from Australia but I am concerned about expenses. Thank you for any info.

Hi, I am in Australia and I believe there is some kind of trade agreement between Australia and the US of A allowing goods up to $1,000 to incur no taxes. If the pearls are to be insured you will have to declare the value but if not your friend could mark as a value of under $1,000 to escape the taxes etc. Allow for dollar exchange. If sent by an Express courier that has a good reputation it should be safe enough not to worry about full insurance.

Apart from that my advise is to phone your PO and ask. They won't ask for your name and details so no harm done. They don't in Australia anyway. From other countries we are hit hard with import duties and taxes.
