Considering a single pearl pendant as a first pearl purchase. Can I see pictures of yours & any details you can share?
Trying to decide which “specs” are important to me: size, type freshwater vs Akoya, AA, AAA, Hanadama, yellow or white gold? I find “real life” photos are more helpful than edited company photos. Thanks!!

How would you like to wear it? If you are looking for a large pearl to be worn on a long chain, then look at larger freshwaters, Tahitians or south sea pearls, since akoyas don't grow very large.
If you want a daintier size pearl to be worn on a shorter chain, then go for the highest luster you can, whatever pearl you choose, because it will be highly visible.

If you want a classic white round pearl, akoya luster will exceed that of most freshwaters-- and akoyas have a bead inside so you can definitely get one that is fully round. A freshwater may or may not be fully round.

If you are looking for peach/pink/lavender colors, then you want a freshwater pearl. Those are natural colors for FWP.

If you prefer other colors-- then look into naturally silver/blue akoyas (often in baroque shapes), Tahitians and golden south sea pearls.

Metal color is sometimes chosen to go best with the pearl. I would put a yellow gold bail on a golden south sea pearls, for instance, but probably a white gold bail on a silver/blue akoya. But that's just me.

And then there is budget for this piece. Some kinds of pearls are simply more costly than others. Generally freshwaters will be the least costly and south sea the most costly, all else being equal.

Thanks for the info!

If I won the lottery I’d want a large (8.5-9mm) Hanadama (I’ve fallen a bit in love with the idea of a Hanadama).
But alas I don’t have lottery money, $500-600 is more realistic for this purchase.
Trying to decide: do I sacrifice size or luster?

For a pendant? Sacrifice size, no question. Pearls are all about luster and as this will be a stand-alone pearl, you will want it to look fabulous.
BTW many have noted that high luster makes a pearl look larger, and I agree. Especially a white pearl.

You may consider getting on email lists for announcement of sales. Discounts of 15-20% off are not unusual, especially with holidays approaching. Then you could get a larger pearl for less.

Also-- you could get a AAA instead of Hanadama. Hanadama pearls are AAAs that have been certified by the Pearls Science Lab (or the GIA) to meet certain minimum standards, but a carefully chosen AAA would also be great, and then you could get the larger pearl.

Also-- I don't think single pearls are certified as Hanadama-- just strands and pairs. So do look at AAA instead.

As an example here is one within budget even without a sale price:
