Hey everyone!

Can anyone tell me how I (an amateur) can identify akoya vs. freshwater pearls? I'm interested in being able to distinguish between the two, but I can't seen to find a good resource.

Visiting a few jewelry stores and asking to see strands of both is very helpful. Freshwater pearl culturing has improved to the point that great freshwaters can rival akoya pearls. Think of it as a field-trip!

Field trip...... ha, major snortage GG. Thanks, I needed that :)

How to tell the difference between types of pearls. Handle many. Time and experience.
Akoya lustre is harder but has, to me, less depth

If you see pearls that are not perfectly round it's sometimes easier to tell the difference. FW tend to be potato shaped when they are not round. If you can't do field work for some reason studying the pictures posted here at PG and following the discussions is a great way to educate yourself as well :)

South Sea is the king !
It has it all ! :D

I cant see any type of akoya, fwp or tahitian, that can rival my finest SS ;)
I LOVE the south sea pearls !

Hugs and kisses

Practically, Akoya has perfect round shape, sharper luster and inner nacre. Akoya surface feels cooler and smoother in summer than FWP.
