Hello. My grandfather had this necklace custom made for my first birthday in 1967. Before I gift them to my first granddaughter, I was wondering if they had any value (other than sentimental). I don't want to pay $150 appraisal for a $75 necklace. Thanks!

I can see a drill hole well enough to confirm they are real, but if they are, it's a strand of graduated akoya pearls. If they've held up this well since 1967, the nacre is fine and quite thick. If they are genuine cultured pearls, it's a fine strand.

The 4th pearl to the left of center may have been added later or moved around during a restring. It should be about four pearls farther to the left.

They will make a lovely gift! I would have them cleaned and restrung (moving that pearl as Jeremy suggested, for better graduation) but I don't think they are valuable enough to need to be insured.
