Hoarder or passionate collector? Btw, I think you need more Tahitians. :giggle:
I think the ones I have that are Tahitian are very small I think the larger ones might be dyed fresh water but they are still fun to wear. I don’t buy them because I don’t know them very well and I don’t want to get scammed

Hi all,

I am also a pearl enthusiast and collector. Recently I have bought few new ( to me) graduate saltwater pearl strands with silver marcasite clasps. I have doubts on one of the strads and would like your expert opinions. Is it or not a real saltwater pearl necklace?
I have found identical strands sold on the internet saying is the real deal (asking price over 500 euros). The strand that I have doubts on has a creamy colour, a bit lighter than the rest of the strands but it has smaller size pearls which are knotted individually. Also my camera shows a lot of scratches on the pearls.
Here are the pics by comparison, with my other two strands.
What do you think?

The one you are referring to is imitation.

Since you own genuine pearls I will give you a simple test you can do. Real pearls are cooler than imitation pearls made from coated glass or plastic beads.
Assuming all the pearls have been in the same room for a while (same ambient temperature), compare the temperature of the strand you are in doubt about by touching it briefly to your lips, then repeating the test with a real strand. The real strand will feel cooler on your lips.
Lips are very sensitive to temperature, which is why we suggest touching them to your lips.

If you own a jeweler's loupe (10x magnifier) and use it to examine the surface of the pearls, you will see the real pearls have a smoother surface texture than imitation pearls. In this photo of Renee Newman's, the imitation pearl is on top.

Thank you very much for your prompt response 🙏.
I do have a magnifying glass I haven't used in a while. I tried the cooler test, but using my hand not lips ( as just bought the old pearls hence might not be so clean) and I still wasn't convinced as they were just as cold by comparison. The weight, colour and scratches made me suspect they might be fake.

The loupe is a 10x magnifier; a regular magnifier won't be strong enough.
If you like to buy used jewelry it wouldn't be a bad idea to buy a loupe; I always have one in my purse. They are not expensive-- Amazon carries them.
