Hi! I just bought a Tahitian Diamond Pendant. A very fast decision! First time in my life I made such a fast decision - less than 20mins since its closing time.

While the sa is going through the membership card registration, my husband found a 'dot' (into) the surface of Tahitian pearl. Hmm i think thats a blemish? I didnt know Tahitian has Blemish? Does Tahitian Pearl has blemish?

The pearl is not with me now but i will try to post the picture later on. Its pretty dark compared to another Tahitian pearl and I buy it because it looks more lustre? and I can see my image on the pearl. V clear reflection. The shop doesnt do any pearl grading though. Its just a 8.5 - 9mm Tahitian Pearl. Consider round to me.

Thanks!
Happy New Yr!

Very difficult to comment with no photo. Hope you can provide one soon. Yes, it could be a blemish. Yes, a Tahitian pearl without any blemish and great luster would be top quality. However, many pearls have some blemishes and are still very beautiful. If making a pendant, the jeweler might set the pearl so the imperfection was in the back, and less noticeable. I hope you have the option of returning the pendant if it is not to your liking. Sounds like you purchased in an auction?

I don't know what this means
While the sa is going through the membership card registration,

There is a very good book available, and not expensive, that will help you learn about pearls and purchasing them. It is Pearl Buying Guide by Renee Newman GG updated 5th edition.

Of course, reading here on the forum and being able to ask questions is of great benefit also!

Oh i bought something from this jewellery store and i am eligible for their membership registration. sa = sales assistant
Yea I was slightly upset that the pearl blemish is on the top of the setting. wont be able to see from the pendant front though. i dont know why the jewellery decided to set this way instead of hiding it behind? Dont know if it can be injured by someone or the luster is better the way its set.

One thing bad abt the shop is that they do not take good care of the pearl. They just have a few selections of pearls (they are jewellery store and main focus is diamonds) ... they put 2 pendants to a chain for me to try them up. Call them lazy. But i dont like the way they disrespect the pearl. hehehe maybe i sound too serious :p

ps give me one day to post it up because its 12 38AM at my side and i am working while running some reports. hehehe

hopefully the attachment works. this is my first time taking pic of pearl. its not nicely captured. hopefully later i can use another camera. P1050854.jpgP1050819.jpgP1050869.jpgP1050860b.jpgP1050866b.jpg

Welcome. I am happy that the book is cheap. Probably going to place an international order soon from Amazon. Need to order my Harry Potter book collection too haha.

Ok i've just uploaded some not well taken pictures. i can see my image on the pearl but i didnt manage to capture my reflection. Also, the "dot" thats in the pearl... i cannot capture it as well. I will have to try harder later with a better camera.

I like to check, is my pearl considered as peacock? How do you guys see overtone in a dark pearl? I dont know where to focus my eyes haha

The pearl looks great to me. We sometimes let little flaws grow in our minds, but no one would ever look closely enough to notice. I see a green overtone, which is my favorite. Enjoy!

think I really sucks at taking pearl pic. Not sure if I should take with or without flash. Most of these pics are taken with flash. When I wear pink top I can see it in the pearl reflection..

Do the pics show the luster of the pearl? Do you think its a good grade Pearl? :p
Or does it look "alive" or something?

i only get to see one pearl each design .. N since this pearl as one flaw while making payment, the store manager said she will bring in one pc for me to compare
sound pathetic hehe each boutique only one pc each

Oh yes Happy New Year to everyone! I just went to saw 11mins? of fireworks display in town. Now its 3am+ at my side and its 01.01.2011!!!

I think that you have a beautiful pearl in a lovely setting. Now begins the collecting fun. Welcome to Pearl Guide Jen and Happy New Year!

Marianne

Thank you for the encouraging words and explaination. Now i understand more about Tahitian pearls and know that I am having one with greenish overtone. I think it looks quite a peacock color in real life. The pearl looks different in the day.

Btw, I like to know how to pronunce Tahitian? I heard mikimoto ladies pronuncing it as 'Ta-hi-ti' and I pronunce it as 'Ta-hi-T-ian'. Am I wrong?

Now its 01-01-2011 in USA i suppose? :) Happy New Year

Hi Jen!
That one little blemish proves the pearl grew in a shell, where things are not always perfect. Its a lovely pearl and an intriguing setting. Enjoy it!

Y'know, even after reading "blemish" over and over, I just see the pearl. Where is the blemish? Can you point it out on very bottom pearl pic of post #8, anybody? If not too much trouble?

The blemish is on the top of the pearl (from front pendant view). its abt i think a normal pen dot on a paper (size). Unfortunately, I was unable to capture it in the camera. Just so hard to do the macro zoom and the camera giving error (nothing to focus). I will see if i can get it done tomorrow under natural daylight.

Oh, thanks, that'd be great! Don't stress about it, though, if you don't get to it for a while. I'm just trying to train my eye, and of course in person it's easier to do! see, I mean.

It looks lovely! I love what Caitlin said about your pearl's blemish. The color is so rich and yummy. Enjoy!

I havent post that blemish photo out yet! sorry been busy rushing out for work. Guess I have to wait till the weekend

I was at the store yesterday to check out the pearls because on the time of purchase, the store manager said she will bring over some for me to see. the shop dont sell much pearls (its a jewellery store focusing on diamonds), the sa isnt very helpful when i checked out the other pearls they brought over for me to take a look.
I asked if its a peacock color n the answer i get is, u cannot get this information until u send the items in for a lab test.
I also dont have friends to teach me on pearls but luckily, i get some information from the posts here abt the pearl i have. so i will more or less try to apply that on the other tahitian pearls.

Also, i was able to see some metallic overtone in one of them. However, the shop lights is bugging me. The whole shop is with yellow or umber? lights. No white lights for me to check out the pearls. How am I going to choose pearls under such lights? *grumble* lol

Always look at the pearls in daylight as well as under artificial light. Indeed I always insist on my customers taking any pearls under consideration out into natural light - helps the pearls to sell themselves as they perk up and show off what they have
