Pearls: Conservative or cool?

With the options available in pearls these days I can't believe this is even a question anymore but apparently it is....

The question is, will they look (Queen) mumsy or cool? Pearls have been trickling on to the fashion scene for a while now courtesy of the TV show Mad Men. But does a modern bride ? or her peer ? want to look like a mid-century housewife, no matter how attractive?
