I know someone who's looking to sell a Basra natural pearl necklace which has been their family heirloom for 200-250 years.

The necklace has been examined by the Gem and Pearl Testing Laboratory of Bahrain and as per the certificate here are some details:

Type; Graduated ten row pearl necklace
Weight: 963.87 carats (192.77 grams)
Number of pearls: 1449
Color: White to cream
Dimensions of the largest pearl: 10.3x91.mm

Here's a photo of the necklace IMG-20170222-WA0011.jpg

How much would be a fair offer for this item? I am based in Mumbai, India.

Accepting the provenance at face value, that's quite a necklace. The age might be true, but you'd need to provide sufficient evidence to support the claim.

That said, Pearl-Guide is not a selling site, nor do we appraise value. I recommend it be taken to a reputable auction house for inspection and valuation.
