Concentration of Mn2+ in salt/fresh water pearl?

I know that the concentration of Manganese in freshwater pearls is much higher than in saltwater pearl.
But I want to know the reason of these concentration difference.

Also, Can we use manganese test strip to distinguish the saltwater and freshwater pearl? Because there is Manganese concentration difference between these two type pearls.
 
Drop small concentration HCL on the surface of the pearl and then swipe the test strips over the area
 
If you use hydrochloric acid you will damage the pearl's surface; I take it this isn't important, you just want to try it?

I'll see if Strack mentions manganese, but it seems logical to think that the pearl's makeup would depend on the water in which the oyster is farmed.

Edit: No mention of manganese in the index of her book.
