Species determination of porcelanous pearls is based on provenance, in addition to typicity. What does the seller say about his source? The volute (melo melo) shell can certainly produce all these pearls. But only one of the specimens would be considered 'typical' and in fact gemologically significant. Are the pearls priced by piece or by lot?

Different sellers. These are listed on Etsy. The typical I assume are the porcelain feel with some of them showing visible flame or at least under close inspection. There are ways to mimic similar look and thus not natural. I am very curious if the Volute (Bater) snail can produce these low grade, or less common pearls. Some sellers list as individual pearls, others as part of a ring or pendant. Not much info is provided as to the source. One of these sellers is the one I purchased from and consequently returned merchandise. He insists to this day that it is genuine Melo Melo. I guess I just at the least confirm if he may be honest.

As I mentioned in another thread, only buy Melo-Melo with a certficate from a top gem lab, And the more attractive the pearl appears in the photo (with commensurate price), the more the certificate is needed.
