That style is a variation on a classic Egyptian/Middle East style. In Elisabeth Strack's book "Pearls", (p141) there is a picture of a young beauty wearing a similar style necklace which is ancient and is part of Bahrain's National Treasures. It hangs to her knees.

Look at those pearls. Those are fairly typical shapes for natural pearls. The rounder pearls would be used in shorter necklaces. And even they would not be all that round -as in the top row of this necklace where the rounder pearls are. That necklace is an education in what natural pearls look like.
