I recently got back from a trip to Shanghai where I did some pearl shopping, and this forum was so helpful I thought I'd post some updated info as most of the other threads were at least a few years old.

I went to the Hongqiao Jewelry City market at 3721 Hongmei Road just after 10AM on a Monday. Only about one in three of the shops were open, I guess partly because it was early and partly because it was a weekday. But Ling Ling's was open so I was happy! I had a browse in the other shop windows and stalls on the way there to see what was around, but ultimately the recommendations from this forum and the stock Ling Ling had on display meant I was happy to stop at their shop.

There were two staff in the shop and they were very accommodating, bringing out multiple ropes of different pearls for me to look at. I had really wanted a lavender string but unfortunately they didn't have any, the only lavender they had were earrings. So I looked over their white freshwater pearls instead - I'm definitely not an expert but they seemed good quality and very lustrous. The larger sizes (+8.0 mm) did have more blemishes and scratches, but the smaller sizes were better.

I wanted a 6.0-6.5 mm strand for my sister's birthday and also a 4.5-5.0 mm strand for myself for everyday wear. After looking through their stock and picking out the two I wanted, the staff initially quoted me 1500 RMB (€192) for the 6.0-6.5 mm and 450 RMB (€57) for the 4.5-5.0 mm. After some good-natured bargaining, we settled on 1000 RMB (€128) for both, including the gold-plated clasps and a few extra pearls to lengthen each strand. I was happy with the price and the quality, although I would have preferred the solid gold clasps the price was much higher and the staff weren't willing to negotiate on the gold price as much as the pearls, understandably.

You can see the strands in the pictures below: the 4.5-5.0 mm, 6.0-6.5 mm, and then an 8.5-9.0 mm Freshadama strand from PP for comparison. I never noticed how creamy the PP strand was until seeing it next to the whiter new strands!

One thing I was wondering - is it normal not to knot between the pearls for the smaller sizes? Ling Ling only knotted between the pearls at the end of the 6.0-6.5 mm strand, but should I get them both restrung with knots to prevent the pearls rubbing against each other?

I'm not sure I would knot between the pearls in the smaller strand. They look cute the way they are. If you like the way they look on your neck right now, and are okay with the gold plated clasps, try wearing them that way for a while before deciding. I would not worry so much about rubbing.

If you want to change the clasp at some point you can decide then whether to knot between the pearls. You can do the knotting yourself-- see my tutorial, which is a sticky on the Lowly Beader's Club forum.

It's interesting to see the Freshadama strand side by side with the new whiter pearls. The luster of the smaller strand is like that of the Freshadamas.

Yes, I quite like them as they are and I think the knots would be so big in comparison to the pearls, it would look a bit strange. I'm thinking of getting the clasp changed to something fancier on the larger strand for my sister though, so maybe I'll see about re-stringing those pearls at that point.

I was impressed with the lustre on the small strands at Ling Ling, they were much brighter than the larger pearls she showed me - anything above about 8.0mm was much more dull and they all seemed to have lots of marks. I suppose there are more small pearls out there, so it's easier and cheaper to find very lustrous ones compared to the rarer larger sizes? But it also makes me appreciate my Freshadamas even more, as a pearl novice who hadn't really seen any strands close up before I bought that necklace!

If you do decide to knot between the small ones, I'd use fine synthetic thread, such as PowerPro 10# test or Serafil #40. Both are stronger than fine silk, and easier to work with. I have used both when restringing small pearls.

I expect as time goes on there will be more / better quality, new white bead nuked FWP. This always seems to be the way with the Chinese pearl technology. They are always improving.

Ling Ling is great. She is one of the first people I met in Beijing more than 20 years ago.

The pearls you purchased are the new small Edisons. They have a bead nucleus. The larger ones you saw may have been traditional tissue-grown freshwater. There is very little beaded production between 6.5 and 9 mm because the small beaded pearls are grown in the mantle and the large beaded pearls are grown in-body. They haven't quite perfected mantle-grown bead nucleation in the 7-9 range.

The pearls are so white because they are using a new hybrid donor shell that produces very white nacre. You can read about it in the updated Pearls As One freshwater section -https://www.pearlsasone.org/courses/pearls_as_one/lectures/1219673
