Pearl rings - What's hot, what's not?

I saw those two when I was browsing looking for the idea...

I think I liked all in principle, but wondered how would they 'feel' with such a thin base on the finger and added height. Although others with fairly large pearls pinned to a normal thread-thin bad work just fine.

Of the pearl rings in the galery, the 'Tendril' ring is the most tempting for me as a wearable piece, esp. with a smaller pearl. Frankly, I don't know how large the pearl could go before getting into keep-your-hands-still evening wear territory.

Have you tried any of them on by any chance ?

However, my attitude towards rings depends on the puny ring size (~3 US) I am wearing Quite a few things that work just well in the usual size 6-7 change their feel and appearance when/if sized 3 sizes down... and some round pearls used in rings are bigger than the ring would be, LOL! Fine, but they still look as if I am keeping a ball in tenuous balance on top of my hand!

What an incredible ensemble! I love your work. I just started reading the pearl guide this week after Jeremy posted my design for a necklace of freshadama's and akoya's. Natalie did a great job putting them together and then told me about this website. I've been watching for other designs and yours are terriffic. I'll be watching for future editions.
This particular thread started out about pearl rings. I have mixed feeling about this. I use my hands a lot and had my wedding ring designed with all the stones (13) set down into the band to keep them out of the way. I have to agree that pearls are definitely for special occassions.

Those are Sept/Oct purchases. I'll never afford a full strand of Tahitians or SS if this keeps up.

If it isn't presumptuous, I'd like to share the pearl rings I have acquired over the last few years. I can't show you the first two -- they're dainty Akoyas that I "hid" too well one time. I also have a couple of Mabe rings, but nothing special.

I must admit that I only liked dainty rings until I met my friend Georgene. Gradually my rings started getting bigger, too. Once I started wearing longer fingernails, I found that larger rings didn't look so out-of-place.

The other bad influence from Georgene is being turned into a "set girl". I always have to complete the set, or suite.

I am very careful with the rings -- now. You'll see that the silver Tahitian has a tiny patch of scratches right on the top. Akoyas seem to be more durable. Do you find that as well?

Can you guess which one is my favorite?

I, too, like suites, although I don't always wear all at once, except for the dressiest occasions.

That "pinky" ring is only there because Bread and I developed a close relationship, and it won't go on the ring finger anymore

By the way, it was a lucky eBay win from a estate firm that didn't recognize what it had.

It's not the favorite, but I do love them all!

The gray one was the favorite, until the white south sea came along. You can't really see it in the photo, but it glows as if it was lit from within.

Personally I like a pearl surrounded by small diamonds -- either a halo look or a combination of small rounds and channel set bagquettes.

Diamonds and pearls in combo are classic.

That is definitely the best pearl ring I have seen! I also like a very simple pearl ring - just a band, a medium sized pearl, and 6 or so gold prongs holding it down. What I love about pearls is how simple, elegant, and classic they are. I think a pearl ring should capture that.

Jeremy - About the changeable setting ring concept: I had a ring like that when I was about 12 that I got at a bead store. Mine was a simple silver ring and it was designed so that you could put in any bead you wanted. I dunno what brand it was, but it was probably about $10 at the time. I've never heard of that being done with high end jewelry - personally I'd be afraid that if you can take it out so easily, the pearl would fall out.

I don't think I like the Reese ring very much. The pearl just looks too vulnerable sitting alone up there! I do like Caitlin's mom's ring. I like metal woven around a pearl in some way, which serves as protection and as part of the design of the ring. Caitlin's mom's ring has an organic look to it which is very neat.

I agree, its just waiting to get knocked, but it sure does display its beauty in a very minimal way, which I always like.

Love the baroque pearl ring, but for me, please skip the diamonds. Give me more pearls, or colored gems. The band is attractive, I always like rope texture, however why waste the money on platinum, it is hardly going to show, white gold is fine, or even sterling!

Not sure if Plat is even good for 'show'... just useful to hold stones with minimal mass. When it comes to showing metal in jewelry for its own sake, my heart goes to silver (for the patina, and it is the whitest jewelry metal anyway), and deep-colored pure gold... Not sure what those other white metals do other then being convenient, neutral stone holders.

That style of shank looks terrific in black (not sure if it was the same signature)... it made the whole object retain a marine theme, methinks. And that was carrying black pearls only.

I'm with you about diamonds. Would you go THIS far with the 'garnish'?
My favorite pearls props are coral and aquamarine, or otherwise something that catches the overtone of the pearls: dark Tahitians seem to always call for green or red ... Oh well.

On my hand, such pearls would be so imposing, that I would not add anything to the ring.

Many Asian cultures prefer platinum rather than white gold for the value. I personally do not like silver as it may tarnish, unless it's rhodium plated (which technically makes it look whiter than silver naturally does). I find white gold to be a complete rip-off of platinum due to the terminology in Chinese, so if I have the choice to use platinum I'd rather that than white gold. Anything plated to me is not "real" per se. However, for hardiness my personal favorite is titanium.

Precisely. I can't imagine this is a 'fad' given the enormous possibilities that no other metal can give. Wonder if it isn't already the new ultimate jewelry metal. If it makes SUCH THINGS possible... every truly valuable jewelry signature today seems to have a few astonishing titanium pieces. Just too few and too rarefied to have trickled down. Perhaps some more labour-less technology will let this metal show its potential in more down to earth objects, and cheapen it out eventually but for now... That's my thinking out loud anyway.
