Hello. I'm a newbie to the pearl world. A co-worker brought back some pearls from the Philippines. She said these are Tahitians but I'm not sure and was wondering if someone here could give me some insight before I purchase these. I would love any advice and opinions! Thank you in advance :)

Hi bubbles. I am far from an expert that is for sure, but to me these do appear to be true Tahitian pearls (or black South Sea as they are calling them now). They are rather large, but seem to lack a certain overtone which is extremely desirable in Tahitian pearls (but is commonly missing from the larger ones). Can I ask how much you were going to pay?

Welcome, Bubbles 31,

Agree with Jodie, they do appear to be Tahitian pearls. Is the color pretty accurate in the photo, perhaps a medium, silvery gray? The pearls may be prettier in person than the photos show. It would be easier to evaluate the color and luster on a white background. Do you love the color? If you're not familiar with Tahitians and their range of colors and prices, perhaps take a look at PearlParadise.com and TahitianPearls.biz to compare prices, size and colors. If you are still drawn to this strand for the asking price, then go for it.

Great advice. I would add that one of the most important things is how they look against your skin. Some colors of Tahitian pearls look terrible on me and some (green) look terrific. :)
