Hong Kong - looking for info!

depending on when you go there is an international jewellery fair in Shenzhen feb 10-13. Shenzhen is just over the border and can be visited as a day out (though you do need a visa) that might be one way to start.

HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2/16/2012 2/20/2012

Thanks for that, looks like I will be going around the jewelry fair time. I dont suppose anyone is familiar with any of the pearl exhibitors .. I'm doing this prior to two knee replacements so I'll be lucky to last more than a couple of hours..be good if I could narrow down my stops :) I've never been to a trade fair before .. its a bit intimidating..

Sorry to forget the HK show for you - I was at speed and the shenzen literature was next to my keyboard! I'm banned from travel for the next couple of months due to the due arrival of first grandchild.
While we could direct you to various sellers you would probably be better for the HK show just wandering round and seeing what catches your eye. Then barter barter. Most sellers will scoop you into their stall so you will be able to sit down and there are other places to sit as well. If you don't like the price asked then go to the next stall. Always ask before you get started if the seller will split a bundle (if taht is what you want). I've only ever come across one who would not and he had paired one good strand with one really poor one so I walked.
The fair is where you will be dazzled by how many pearls there are, but be able to find some really unusual ones. Take your carry on bag and use that to shift everything. Take a bottle of water
WHere are you staying in HK - mainland or island? What I said about a day trip to Shenzen does apply - the shopping (non pearl) can be fabulous fabulous

Thanks so much for the great info Wendy, it is truly much appreciated. I am pretty ignorant on the quality etc of pearls - everything I know I have learned on these wonderful forums over the past few months. Would love to take a course like those offered in the USA but havent found any here in Australia so far. So, in attending this fair I feel a bit like the lamb asking the wolves 'whats for lunch?' . Feeling a bit better having read your info .. but if you wouldnt mind pm'ing me a couple of names of companies that are trustworthy that would be great.

We are looking at hotels on HKisland ... (I tend to use TripAdvisor for choosing hotels..their top 10 for a city are always a good bet.)

Again, thanks for the glimpse into how to survive a fair! <3

hey Kathleen - how exciting, what a trip to look foward to :)

can't help with this one, but sounds like you are already getting expert advice !!

hope you enjoy it all, and come home with some special goodies

Hi Kathleen - I will be at the HK show... pm me again with your contact details!

I'll be there as well so might be a good get together again for pearl guiders.

I can't tell you how it warms my heart to see you pearl-guiders meet up in Hong Kong. I swear, I wish I were better than the worst kind of traveler, because the tutoring I have received on this forum from those who have been to Hong Kong would enable me to have a wonderful trip! Including meeting up with other pearl-guiders. Pardon me while I go away and mist up for a few minutes......I love this place.

OK. Back.

Now come to Tucson, all you pearl guiders and meet up with Jeremy, probably on Saturday, or whatever day Elizabeth Strack gives her talk. I guess someone can post that info! If you want to take a pearl walk with Jeremy, Tucson after Strack's talk is the place to do it! You can meet a lot of his friends!

Wow! A passle of pearly people!

Alex, thanks for that, I hope I can find a few things and don't come home with shell pearls lol since I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing!

Nerida - I shall send the info :)

Caitlin , you are absolutely right, this is a great place. I came to pearls late in life and they are beginning to take over !!

I dont think John planned to spend his retirement going to pearl shows..but..he might just come around..if not..separate vacations!!

we won't let you come home with shell pearls... you will be amazed at the show!

Looks like there's no shortage of good restaurants! Where do you prefer Mike?

There is a place called "The Congress" That has the best view of the water, and they tend to treat pearl guide people very well. I can arrange it if everyone can pick a day in advance. What do you think Jeremy?

I don't think there will be any shell pearls 9in the loose section anyway) I don't remember seeing any.
you'll need cash! It's all in cash if you don't have an account with the sellers.
