Very Unique Pearls...but I love them anyway!

So, new member here (thanks Pattye for the referral to the site!) and I'm looking for some help with these odd pearls. A fine jeweler in Lahaina loved them enough to combine them with gold and diamonds and I loved them enough to purchase them in 2010. They are interesting and eye catching. Many comment on them, mostly asking about their origin. As I recall, the jeweler said that he had come across them and just liked them. Can anyone weigh in on them? Thanks for your help.

They don't appear to have a bead nucleus. About what size are they?

The dark spots remind me of abalone pearls. Curious to hear from experts.
