Gifted as a wedding present, what kind are they?

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope someone can help me out. When I got married in November of last year, my mother gave me these pearls/earring set. She received them late 80's/early 90's from a family friend. I never got info on them and I was curious to know if they were real or what kind they were. (The black smudge on the earring is cleaned off)

Unfortunately, they are not real pearls.
