Black Butterfly pearls

These look like normal Tahitian pearls. I believe the name "Black Butterflies" is just there for marketing reasons. I would have used "Les Noir Papillons" just for oomph ;)

🤣 Douglas! I asked if they were black akoyas, they said 'no'...they are black butterfly pearls...I've noticed with O'Hara...they seem to have their own lingo going on with their jewelry (Japan based seller). They are just over $1000 USD for the strand plus shipping...

I looked it up out of curiosity (Japanese minor in college). The black-lipped pearl oyster in Japanese is 黒蝶貝 (kurochougai). The three characters literally mean "black butterfly shellfish". So yes, it's a translation issue. :)
Thanks for the looking that up @Celonmaril
