Are they Ugly Tahitians or not? 🧐

Making a bracelet with the better ones would also give you practice knotting. :)

Are they Ugly Tahitians or not? 🧐

We have all bought some pearls we regretted somewhere along the way. Consider it part of your pearl education. ;)

Are they Ugly Tahitians or not? 🧐

To me they look like bad quality dyed FWP. Sorry.

    Help with ID .

Translating from Polish with help of Google: "Hello community. I want to emphasize that I'm not familiar with pearls, so please don't throw me under the bus. A few years ago, on a rocky part of the beach in St. Nazaire, western France, I found what I thought was mother-of-pearl or a pearl...

Please tell me these are Akoya 🫣

That helps a lot. I will go with akoyas now based on those photos. They are not all fully round but that happens with akoyas, and I see one in your second photo that looks a bit like one of my more gnarly baroque akoyas. I would clean them and restring them.

Faux pearls on gold post...how to remove?

I'm in the process of trying to get 18K cups off my gray Majorica studs. So far I have not gotten the cups to loosen even a bit, not after soaking in boiling water 3 minutes and not after microwaving on high in the same boiling water for 3 more minutes. The pearl is also unaffected. I'll leave...

Where to buy quality south sea pearl necklace

If you have the budget for Paspaley, go for it! They do have beautiful pearls. Jewelmer also sells lovely pearls. There are some retail stores that carry Jewelmer in the USA.

eBay find - looking for opinions

They are cool shapes! And I'm glad you paid FW prices. One result of the Chinese improving their pearl culturing technology is that one doesn't find as many of these odd shaped pearls any more, which is unfortunate IMO. Do post photos when you have remade them!

    Pearls for men

My husband likes wearing Tahitian strands. At this point he has 4! He also has a necklace I made him with 3 large Tahitian/SS pearls strung on leather. I got him a Tahitian keshi stud earring that looks very good on him, but he prefers the chunky silver and gold rings he hand crafted for...

eBay find - looking for opinions

To me they look like Chinese freshwaters from the late 1990s/early 2000s. I have some that shape that are dyed to resemble Tahitians. The shapes are fun! They need restringing; the thread is quite grimy. If you do that yourself (saves $$), you could string the bracelet to be a necklace...

Faux pearls on gold post...how to remove?

I don't wear them at all-- they are an unflattering shade of gray for me. I prefer my real Tahitians.

    Dyed or natural Akoyas?

They are very uniform and dark...I think they are dyed. Sometimes you can see accumulations of dye in blemishes.

    I’m so lost!!!

The egg shaped pearls (long necklace) are cultured freshwater pearls from China. The round pearls could be akoyas but I am inclined to think that they are also freshwaters, based on their luster, general appearance and the way they are finished -- the way the pearls attach to the clasp -- is...

Faux pearls on gold post...how to remove?

I may try this. I have a pair of Majorica imitation Tahitian studs set in hefty, generously sized 18K findings. (Usually their findings are silver or vermeil).

    Large pearl earrings

Mabe pearls are made of the same nacre as the inside of the shell, also known as mother of pearl. In the case of mabe pearls, a domed insert is glued to the inside of the shell and nacre is laid down over that. Have a look at this excellent series about mabe pearls...

    Weird thrifted pearls

Also, to give them a bath, I recommend distilled water with a bit of mild soap swished in it. Let them sit in the soapy water for 15 minutes or so and very gently wipe off grime with a soft cloth. Rinse in more distilled water and lay them on a towel to dry for 24 hours. Then if you are inclined...

    Weird thrifted pearls

These are naturally colored akoyas, but the nacre is thin. Sometimes when the bead is implanted in the oyster's gonad, a dark liquid is released, which coats the bead. Nacre is laid down over the bead. The nacre itself is clear but through the layers of nacre, the light creates a kind of...

My new Golden South Sea Pearl strand just arrived! 🌟

I'm guessing they're the same silicone bumpers that I have in my GSS necklace from Cees. The bumpers take the place of knots in necklaces strung on wire.
